MAN B&W Diesel's Service Center Denmark has performed yet another special straightening task to a damaged propeller shaft. Last week the propeller tailshaft of the German container feeder vessel “Adele J” was trucked from Holland to Frederikshavn, Denmark.
Dutch ship repair with Danish assistance
A minor shaft deflection had been observed onboard, and the operator of “Adele J” - the Reederei Jungerhans, Haren (Ems), Germany - decided to have the shaft sent to Denmark in connection with the vessel’s 10 year docking, class survey, overhaul and repair at Van Brink BV Shiprepair Yard, Ho lland.
Monday to Wednesday – task completed
Cold straightening in a hydraulic press - final grinding of the coupling flange end, and recalculation of the push-up dimension for the coupling muff - was carried out in only three days. Together with acceptance from Reederei Jungerhans and a classification approval from Germanischer Lloyd.
Quick and cost effective
Class approved cold straightening of bent shafts has become more and more popular, due to the very clear advantages in time and costs compared to the procurement of for instance new propeller shafts. If required the shafts can be magnafluxed for cracks and fissures.
Straightening of propeller shafts and rudder stocks
An increasing number of propeller shafts are straightened in Frederikshavn.
Service and repair of complete MAN Diesel Alpha propulsion packages including propeller systems clearly contributes to the shaft business. Most of the tasks, however, are related to damaged propeller equipment as a result of manoeuvring in harbours and shallow waters, contact with the ground, stone reefs etc.
The hydraulic press at MAN Diesel’s Service Center Denmark is available for a number of different tasks such as cold straightening of propeller shafts, rudder stocks as well as other shaft types with diameters up to the 500 mm range.
