Following the trend of required higher overall ship efficiency since the first oil crisis in 1973, the efficiency of the main engines has increased and, today, the fuel energy efficiency is about 50% This high efficiency has, among others,led to a correspondingly lower exhaust gas temperature after the turbochargers.

Until the end of 2004 there was still one market for ocean-going cargo ships to which the two-stroke engine had not yet been introduced: i.e. the LNG market. This market has so far been dominated by steam turbines, but the first orders for two-stroke diesel engines were given at the end of 2004. Today, 16 ME engines to LNG carriers have been ordered for eight LNG carriers, which are to be built in Korea, Ref. [1].
